Boxing Day Tragedy: 50 Feared Dead, Others Missing As Boat Capsizes In Benue
A boat carrying passengers has capsized in River Buruku in Buruku local government area of Benue State with no fewer than 50 persons feared dead and many missing. River Buruku is a tributary of the River Benue and flows along a beach where youths hold picnics. It was learnt that the passengers, including men and women were fun-seekers, who were at Buruku Beach to celebrate Boxing Day when tragedy struck. The incident reportedly occurred at about 8.45pm when the boat had taken passengers aboard at the crossing terminal before it capsized minutes after starting its journey in yet to be ascertained circumstances. Confirming the incident, spokesman of the Benue State police command, DSP Daniel Ezeala said, “The number of casualties is yet to be ascertained and investigation is in process”. He stated that a rescue team has already been dispatched to search for victims in the river
